Many grandchildren love axolotls, so these pages make a nice shared activity. They also invite a question: what colors are real axolotls?

What colors are real axolotls, and where do they live?

Animal Diversity Web, from the University of Michigan, describes axolotls as coming from Lake Xochimilco near Mexico City. It notes they have feathery external gills and finned tails for swimming. Color the gills a stronger shade than the body, since they are the axolotl's most famous feature.

Real axolotls come in several colors. The same source says they range from wild type, a dark, mottled brownish-green, to albino. So the Realistic Axolotl can be a spotted green-brown, while the cute ones can be pale pink with deeper pink gills. Both are true to life.

For a water scene, color the background in soft blues and greens, and leave the bubbles white. Pondweed looks best in two greens. The rest is up to you.

Axolotl coloring pages make stickers, cards and an aquarium display.

Colored axolotls can be cut out and used as stickers on a notebook. A cute axolotl also makes a birthday card. On cardstock, the card holds its fold. Kids can color several axolotls and tape them inside a paper "tank" drawn on a sheet of blue paper.
