What are the parts of a castle called?

Most castles on these pages share the same parts. The moat is the ring of water around the walls. The drawbridge is the bridge that lifts up to close the entrance, and the portcullis is the heavy grid gate behind it. The notched tops of the walls are the battlements, and the tall round or square parts are towers.

The and show a drawbridge on chains over a moat. The has a portcullis in its gate. Color each part a different shade: gray stone walls, blue water in the moat, brown wood on the drawbridge and bright flags on the towers. Kids can point to each part and say its name as they go.

How do you color castle stone so it looks real?

Stone is rarely one gray. Use two or three grays and a little tan or brown, and change shade from block to block. Color the side of each tower that faces away from the sun a little darker, so it looks round.

For ruins and cliffs, add green for moss and ivy in the cracks. Fairy castles can go pastel: pink, lilac and pale blue with gold roofs. Flags look best in bold colors, like red, blue and yellow. Finished castles can then become part of a game.

Castle coloring pages make crowns, shields and a paper kingdom.

The makes a family crest: kids color the shield with their favorite colors and symbols. Print it on cardstock and cut it out to hold up in a pretend battle. Several colored castles and knights taped to a wall make a whole paper kingdom.
