How do you color candy cane stripes neatly?

Color every other stripe first. Pick one color, usually red, and fill stripe one, three, five and so on down the cane. Then decide whether the stripes between stay white or get a second color, such as green.

Work from the top of the hook to the bottom, so your hand does not smudge finished stripes. Go slowly at the curve of the hook, where the stripes narrow. A marker gives the brightest red, but a colored pencil is easier to keep inside thin stripes. For a shiny look, leave a thin white line down one side of the cane, as if light is catching it.
