How does a pumpkin grow from a flower?

A pumpkin starts as a flower on a long vine. The University of Minnesota Extension explains that the first flowers to open on a pumpkin vine are male. The female flowers open later and have a small swelling at their base. That swelling is the part that becomes the pumpkin, after bees carry pollen to the flower. So the bee on the sheet is doing a real job.

The same extension lists the pumpkin's close relatives in the cucurbit family: summer squash, zucchini, melons, gourds and cucumbers. That is why the crate mixes pumpkins with gourds. Knowing the flower is yellow and the young fruit is green helps with the next question, which colors to use.

How do you color pumpkin coloring pages so they look round and glowing?

Color each rib of a pumpkin separately. Use a mid orange across the whole pumpkin, then add a deeper orange or brown in the grooves between the ribs. Leave a light strip down the middle of each rib, and the pumpkin will look round. Stems look real in brown with a touch of green near the top.

Real pumpkins are not all orange. Heirloom pumpkins on the still life can be white, pale green, tan or blue-gray. For jack-o'-lanterns, color the carved eyes and mouth bright yellow, with orange at the edges, so the face looks lit from inside. On the mandalas, pick three fall colors and repeat them around the circle. Then the pumpkins are ready to decorate the house.

Pumpkin coloring pages make carving templates, porch signs and party crafts.

The sheet works as a carving planner. Let each child pick a face before the knife comes out. The can hang on a real door, and small colored pumpkins make name cards for a fall party. Print the name cards on cardstock so they stand up on the table.
