In a care home or library group, the hayride and apple pie scenes often start talk about autumns past. The site licence lets you photocopy sheets for a group you are running. Coloring leaves also tends to raise a question from kids and adults alike: why do leaves change color at all?
Why do fall leaves change color, and which colors are real?
Leaves change color because the green fades and other pigments show. The State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY ESF) explains it simply. Leaves are green because of chlorophyll, which they use to make food. Yellow and orange pigments sit in the leaf all year, hidden by the green. In fall, the green breaks down and those colors appear.
Reds and purples work differently. SUNY ESF says they come from pigments called anthocyanins that form in the fall. Cool temperatures above freezing help maples turn bright red. An early frost weakens that red.
That gives a simple rule for realistic leaves, again from SUNY ESF. Sugar maples turn brilliant orange. Dogwoods turn reddish purple. Many oaks turn mostly brown. Use those on the , the and the mixed sheet. Knowing the real colors is half the job. The other half is how you lay them down.
How do you color fall coloring pages so they look warm and rich?
Blend the colors instead of filling each shape flat. On a leaf, start with yellow at the stem, then layer orange and red toward the tips. Press lightly so the colors mix. A darker orange along each rib makes a pumpkin look round. A soft blue sky makes orange trees stand out, because blue and orange sit opposite each other on the color wheel.
Cozy indoor scenes need a warmer palette. Warm browns, mustard yellow, deep red and cream give the and a plaid-blanket feeling. Leave a few white spots on a mug or a window, and it looks like light is catching it. A finished page like that is too nice to leave in a drawer.
Fall coloring pages turn into leaf walks, classroom trees and table decorations.
A stack of fall sheets can fill a whole afternoon. A few ideas:
- Go on a leaf walk first. Collect a few real leaves, then color the sheet to match.
- Try a leaf rubbing. Slip a real leaf under a blank corner of the page and rub a crayon's side over it.
- Match leaf to tree. Use the and sheets to spot both shapes outdoors.
- Make a classroom tree. Each child colors and cuts out a leaf for a paper tree on the wall.
- Decorate the table. Cut-out pumpkins, acorns and apples make an easy Thanksgiving centerpiece.
- Hang the colored on a door, or glue it onto a paper plate with the middle cut out.
Print the leaves, wreath and pumpkins you plan to cut out on cardstock, so they stay flat on a wall or a table. For the last days of October, our Halloween coloring pages keep the pumpkins coming.
