All these smiling faces also have a name, and a little science behind them.
What does kawaii mean?
Kawaii is a Japanese word meaning "cute." That is how researchers at Hiroshima University define it in a 2012 study in the journal PLoS ONE, led by Hiroshi Nittono. They noted that kawaii things are popular because they make people feel good.
The team then tested what cute pictures do to careful work. University students did a fine hand task before and after looking at photos. Their scores rose more after photos of puppies and kittens than after photos of grown dogs and cats. The researchers concluded that cute images made people work more carefully. No one has tested coloring itself, but a careful hand is exactly what small kawaii shapes need.
How do you color kawaii coloring pages in the kawaii style?
Kawaii pages look best with flat color and no heavy shading. Choose three or four pastels and repeat them across the whole page. Keep the black outlines crisp, since the bold line is part of the look.
Add two small pink ovals under the eyes for blush. Color the floating hearts and stars in turn, pink, then yellow, then mint, so they sparkle evenly. A gel pen or a glitter pen on the stars adds extra shine.
From a bubble-blowing axolotl to a witch cat at her cauldron, these free printable kawaii coloring pages keep every character tiny, round and smiling. Pick a friend, choose a few pastels, and give it rosy cheeks and shiny stars.
