In a group, these sheets often start stories about cats people have known. That question, what did your cat look like, is also the best way to pick colors.
How do you color a kitten to look like a real cat?
Pick a real coat pattern and copy its colors. The Cat Fanciers' Association describes them in its breed standards, and the American Shorthair standard makes an easy guide:
- Brown tabby. A brilliant coppery brown base with dense black markings and gold eyes.
- Silver tabby. A pale, clear silver base with dense black markings and green eyes.
- Red tabby. A red base with deep, rich red markings and gold eyes.
- Bi-color. White with solid patches of black, blue, red or cream.
Classic and mackerel tabbies in that standard share one sign: an "M" on the forehead. Draw it in with the stripe color before you color the rest of the face. The and have striped faces ready for it.
Calico and tortoiseshell cats wear a patchwork of orange and black. A 2025 study by Toh and colleagues in the journal Current Biology explains why: the orange color gene sits on the X chromosome, and the patches form in female cats. Color the patches in big, uneven shapes, never in stripes. For soft fur with colored pencils, use short, light strokes that follow the way the fur grows. Once your kitten looks real, it deserves a place to go.
A finished kitten coloring page makes a card, a story or a classroom lesson.
A colored kitten makes a lovely card for a friend with a new pet, or a thank-you for a cat sitter. Cardstock keeps a folded kitten card standing on a shelf. Kids can name their kitten and make up its story. They can also cut out several kittens and tuck them into a paper basket.
In a classroom, the and sheets open a talk about what pets need. For a home with dog lovers too, our puppy coloring pages pair well with these. The sheet has one of each.
From a sleepy toddler kitten to a detailed bookshop scene, these free printable kitten coloring pages have a cat for every age. Pick a cute one or a real tabby, and color it in true cat colors.
