Where did the letter Z come from?

The Online Etymology Dictionary traces Z back through Late Latin and the Greek letter zeta to the Hebrew letter zayin. It notes that the name zayin means "weapon," a reference to the letter's shape in ancient Hebrew. So the sharp, angled strokes of Z have a very old story behind them.

Kids can compare the plain Z on the Zigzag Letter Z with the ornate Victorian Initial Z. The shape is the same; only the decoration changes. Zebras, though, are the letter's favorite animal.

How do you color a zebra on the letter Z pages?

Leave the white stripes white and color only the dark ones. A black or dark gray marker is easiest for the stripes. Follow each stripe from one edge to the other so it looks unbroken.

For a softer look, try dark brown instead of black on the Zebra Portrait with Z. Color the mane in the same stripes as the neck. For the cartoon zebras, a pale pink nose and inner ears keeps the face friendly. The zebras are then ready to go on display.
