What do the stars on artists' colored pencils mean?

The stars show lightfastness, or how well a color resists fading in light. Faber-Castell explains that the artists' color industry divides lightfastness into three classes. Three stars means maximum lightfastness, two stars high, and one star limited.

Faber-Castell prints those stars on its artists' pencils next to the color number. So if you plan to frame a finished page, choose three-star colors for the main areas. Faber-Castell also notes that some artists blend its Polychromos colors with linseed oil or baby oil and a brush. Whatever pencils you use, the way you lay them down matters just as much.
