Was the Declaration of Independence really signed on July 4?
Not by everyone. The US National Archives calls it one of the most widely held misconceptions about the Declaration. Congress finished revising the text late on the morning of July 4, 1776. The signing came later: many delegates signed on August 2, and eventually 56 signed in all.
The Archives adds that John Hancock, the President of Congress, signed first, with a bold signature in the middle below the text. Kids can color the or , then sign their page with a big, bold signature of their own. Fireworks are the loudest part of the day, and they are fun to color well.
How do you color fireworks so they glow against the night?
Color the sky first, in dark blue or purple, and leave every firework line white. Then trace the white lines with bright colors: red, gold, green and pink. Against a dark sky, the bright lines look like they are shining.
For one burst, use one or two colors so it reads as a single firework. Make the center of each burst lighter, almost white, and the tips of the lines stronger. On , repeat each firework's colors in the river below as soft reflections. With the sky done, the pages are ready for a summer party.
July coloring pages become party decorations, place mats and summer journals.
Colored fireworks and stars make a bright party garland. Print them on cardstock, cut them out and string them along a porch. A colored or sheet also makes a fun place mat for a cookout.
