How do fireflies light up on a June night?

Fireflies, also called lightning bugs, are beetles that can light up their abdomens. The US National Park Service explains that each firefly species has its own flash pattern, which it uses to find a mate. Great Smoky Mountains National Park alone is home to 19 species, out of more than 2,000 known worldwide.

The park's synchronous fireflies even flash together. The park describes their pattern as five to eight flashes, then about eight seconds of darkness, then again. Color the , and with a glowing yellow-green tail against a dark blue sky. For the glow, leave a small white spot in the middle of the light and color outward in pale yellow, then green.

What are the colors of June, and how do you use them?

June colors are warm and bright: sunny yellows, strawberry reds, sky and sea blues and fresh leaf greens. Use them at full strength for the easy sheets. A sun in yellow and orange, a strawberry in red with pale yellow seeds and a beach ball in stripes all look like summer.

For sea and sky, color from dark to light. Make the water deepest blue at the bottom of the page and paler near the shore. On sand, try a light tan with a few darker speckles. Keep shadows under umbrellas and trees a soft gray-blue, not black. With the colors done, the pages are ready for summer fun.

The makes a funny homemade card for Dad or a grandfather. Print it on cardstock so it folds and stands. Before a beach trip, kids can color the , then try to find real shells that match.

On a warm evening, color the fireflies, then go out and count real ones. The Park Service suggests covering any flashlight with red cellophane so the fireflies are not disturbed.
