These free printable spring coloring pages follow the season as it wakes up: tulips and cherry blossoms, chicks and lambs, rain boots and rainbows, gardens and butterflies. They suit March, April and May, and they fit Easter and Earth Day without being tied to either. Toddlers start with one tulip, one chick or one ladybug. Kids get kite flying, egg hunts and a frog on a lily pad. Teens get kawaii flower pots and picnics, and adults get cottage gardens, a flower shop and lambs in the barn. Many sheets carry the word spring. Two real spring facts explain the butterfly and frog sheets, and the last sections cover coloring and display ideas.

All of these suit older kids and adults who like fine detail. The life cycle, nest and bee sheets also make a small science lesson, since each one shows a living thing at work in spring. Two of the biggest spring changes are on these pages, and both have real timetables.
How does a caterpillar become a butterfly, and when does spring begin?
Monarch Watch, a program at the University of Kansas, explains that butterflies go through four stages: egg, larva or caterpillar, pupa or chrysalis, and adult. A monarch takes about 30 days to go from egg to butterfly. The egg hatches in about four days, and the caterpillar grows for 10 to 14 days. It then spends another 10 to 14 days inside the chrysalis. Monarch caterpillars eat only milkweed, so the leaves on the sheet belong to the plant that feeds them. The page shows a similar change in a pond.
Spring itself starts with the March equinox. The National Weather Service explains that on the equinox, Earth's axis tilts neither toward nor away from the sun. Day and night are then nearly equal everywhere on Earth. After that, days in the Northern Hemisphere keep getting longer, which is why gardens, chicks and flowers fill so many spring sheets. Longer, brighter days also call for brighter colors.
How do you color spring coloring pages so they look fresh and bright?
Spring colors are lighter than fall colors. Use pastel pinks, lavenders, sky blues and soft yellows for flowers and skies. Save stronger greens for leaves and grass, and mix two greens on the same plant: a light one for new growth and a darker one near the stem.
For a real monarch on the sheet, color the wings orange with black veins and edges, and leave small white dots along the border. The caterpillar has yellow, white and black stripes. On rainy scenes, keep raindrops light blue with a white spot, and make rain boots and umbrellas bright red or yellow so they pop. With the colors done, the pages can brighten the house.
Spring coloring pages make window flowers, Easter baskets and classroom gardens.
Cut out the , the and the and tape them to a window for an instant spring garden. A colored or makes a sweet Easter basket tag. Print the tags on cardstock so they hold up on a handle.
Teachers can pair the sheet with a real seed-planting day, and the with a science lesson. For more blooms, see our flower coloring pages. Spring months each have their own pages too, like our March coloring pages and April coloring pages.
From one big tulip for a toddler to a cottage garden for an adult, these free printable spring coloring pages carry you from the first rainy day to full bloom. Pick a pastel palette, add a bright pair of rain boots, and let the season grow on paper.
